VIETNAM NEWS HEADLINES DECEMBER 916:37 Vietnam seeks consultation on COVID-19 vaccination for children aged 5-11 The Health Ministry is holding negotiations with vaccine manufacturers and suppliers to secure vaccines for children of 5-11 years old, Deputy Health Minister Do Xuan Tuyen said. He affirmed that the country now has sufficient COVID-19 vaccine to inoculate people of age 18 and above and children aged 12-17, and booster shots for adults. HCM City's ratio of health workers to 10,000 residents lowest in Vietnam The ratio of medical workers to 10,000 residents in HCMC is only 2.31, the lowest in the country and much lower than the country’s average, at 7, said the director of the municipal Department of Health, Tang Chi Thuong. He said the number of medical workers who resigned during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in the city had been high as they were exhausted after long months of hard work and their incomes were lower than expected, the local media reported. The Department of Health has proposed many solutions to the municipal government to retain medical workers. Specifically, the city should support medical workers with VND4-6 million each per month. Since 2015, the city has supported them, but the support has been modest, at below VND1 million per month. HCMC delays in-person instruction for 1st graders The HCMC government decided on December 8 to shelve a
plan to allow first-graders and five-year-old kindergarten children to return
to school, citing their parents’ concerns over the risk of Covid-19 transmission. Earlier, the city had a plan to allow first, ninth and 12th graders to return to in-person classes from December 13 and five-year-old children a week later. However, only ninth and 12th graders of schools meeting Covid safety requirements and approved by the anti-Covid steering committees of Thu Duc City and districts will attend in-person classes from December 13. HCM City to have plan to reduce COVID deaths HCMC will launch a campaign to protect the health of people aged over 65 and those with underlying health conditions to minimize new Covid infections and fatalities. The first phase of the campaign will start from December 7 to 31. The city will then review the outcome of the first phase before implementing the next phase in 2022, reported the local media. In this campaign, the city will make a list of families with people aged over 65 and those with underlying health conditions to test, vaccinate and provide them with care and treatment if they are found infected with Covid to reduce severe illness and death. Each person will undergo a Covid test twice. If their first test is negative, they will be retested three days later. The testing drive is scheduled to end before December 18. Vietnam commits to reducing child obesity and stunted growth Vietnam has committed to reducing stunted growth among children under-five and to control obesity among all children, at the Tokyo Nutrition for Growth Summit 2021. Hosted by the Government of Japan, the summit was held virtually in Tokyo, Japan, on December 7 and 8, with the participation of delegates from over 100 countries. Vietnam and many countries in the world have faced a triple burden of nutrition, overweight children, and micronutrient deficiencies. The country’s stunting rate among children under 5 was at 19.6 per cent, while the obesity rate was 19 per cent by the end of 2020, according to the National General Nutrition Survey for 2019-20. Over 14,500 new Covid-19 infections recorded on Dec. 8 The Health Ministry confirmed the detection of 14,599 new COVID-19 cases on December 8, an increase of 760 cases compared to the previous day, thereby pushing the overall tally during the ongoing wave to 1,349,270. Among the latest infections, four cases were imported, with the rest being local transmissions. As a result, a total of 8,322 new transmissions were detected among the community. The country’s COVID-19 death toll now stands at 26,930, or 2% of total cases. 22 players named in Vietnamese men’s futsal team for SEA Games Head coach Pham Minh Giang has called up 22 footballers for a training camp ahead of the 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games which Vietnam is due to host in May next year. Vietnam affirms consistent viewpoint on Golan Heights situation Minister Counsellor Nguyen Phuong Tra, Deputy Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations (UN), affirmed Vietnam’s consistent standpoint on the situation in the Golan Heights during a consultation of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on December 8. She voiced her concern over the vulnerable security situation and risks of escalating tensions amid violations of the Disengagement of Forces Agreement. Vietnam called on stakeholders to restrain and respect the UN Charter, UNSC Resolution and relevant agreements so as to ensure peace and stability in the Golan Heights in particular and the region at large. Enhanced cold spell to bring rains to northern Vietnam Rains are expected in some parts of the north of Vietnam on December 9, with the delta and coastal areas likely to see scattered light rainfall, as a result of a strengthened cold spell. Areas from north-central Thanh Hoa to south-central Khanh Hoa provinces are forecast to be struck by torrential rains and thunderstorms caused by high winds from the East. The cold spell has gripped the Northeastern and North-central regions since early morning of the day, lowering the temperature to 13 – 16 degrees Celsius. Temperatures can even drop to below 10 degrees Celsius in mountainous areas. Vietnam, China share poverty reduction experience A webinar discussing Vietnam and China’s poverty reduction experience was held on December 8. Ethnic women, children most vulnerable group in Vietnam SDG indicators: Survey Ethnic minority women and children, especially the Mong and Khmer, are the most vulnerable group in terms of the United Nations' sustainable development goals, according to a survey measuring Vietnam Sustainable Development Goal indicators on Children and Women (SDGCW) 2020-2021. The survey was conducted by the General Statistics Office (GSO) in collaboration with concerned government ministries and agencies. The Vietnam SDGCW survey 2020-2021 generated data for 169 indicators, of which 35 are national SDG indicators, making it a key source of data for monitoring the country’s progress towards achieving the SDGs and its national targets. Hanoi house linked with President Ho Chi Minh listed as national relic site A house in Hanoi’s Tay Ho district where President Ho Chi Minh lived and worked from August 23 to 25, 1945 has been recognised as a national historical relic site by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The house of Nguyen Thi An, located in Phu Thuong ward of Tay Ho district, was the first stop of President Ho Chi Minh on his trip from the Viet Bac resistance base back to Hanoi from August 23, 1945 to read the Declaration of Independence marking the foundation of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, on September 2 the same year. This area was part of the Party Central Committee’s revolutionary base from 1941 to 1945. Local residents supported and protected many senior Party officials such as Truong Chinh, Hoang Van Thu, Le Duc Tho, and Hoang Tung. National conference looks into Party building, rectification The Politburo on December 9 held a national conference on the implementation of the Party Central Committee's conclusion and regulation on Party building and rectification. The conclusion emphasised the resolve to prevent and drive back degradation in ideology, morality and lifestyle, and the phenomena of “self-evolution” and “self-transformation” within the Party, and strictly handle officials and Party members who commit violations. A new regulation on things that Party members are not allowed to do has also been issued. Vietnam highlights trust building in settling chemical weapon issue in Sysia Ambassador Pham Hai Anh, Chargé d’affaires a.i. of Vietnam to the United Nations (UN), has highlighted the importance of building trust in solving the chemical weapon issue in Syria. Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on the implementation of Resolution 2118 (2013) regarding the settlement of Syria’s chemical weapon issue on December 8, he underlined the need to fully comply with the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) as well as enhancing international cooperation and support for this goal. In order to completely solve the chemical weapon-related issue in Syria, the ambassador said it is necessary to build trust and strengthen constructive and non-politicised cooperation between relevant parties and in the international community.
