The cracks in the tarmac were found by airport staff at 3pm May 28 after the departure of a Vietjet Air flight.
The Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV) sent technicians to inspect the runway and decided to halt all further flights until the damage could be repaired.
Scheduled departures were moved to Hanoi's Noi Bai International Airport, with hundreds of intending passengers ferried by cars from Haiphong.
Airport operations have returned to normal by mid-afternoon on May 29.
Vu Duy Mat, deputy director of Cat Bi Airport, told DTiNews the concrete/asphalt tarmac had lower heat-resistance than more modern runways and cracked in the ongoing heat wave.
The CAAV is conducting further inspections to ensure all Cat Bi Airport facilities are safe.
The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said norther Vietnam is experiencing hot weather not seen for six years. High-30s to low-40s have persisted for more than a week.
