Smuggling from Cambodia to Vietnam occurs at border gates in
southwestern provinces, with the common products being sugar, tobacco,
petrol and cattle.
At the border gates in An Giang province, cigarettes are smuggled from Cambodia to Vietnam.
The
smugglers tie hundreds of “Hero” labeled cigarette packs around their
bodies to cross the border into Vietnam. This scene is very common at
the Vinh Suong border gate in Tan Chau town, An Giang province.
Every
day, there are dozens of motorcycles transporting smuggled cigarettes
on National Highway 91 from Chau Doc to Long Xuyen (An Giang).
According
to An Giang authorities, they have detected 835 cases of smuggled goods
worth over VND17.4 billion ($870,000) in January-April this year,
including over 278,000 packs of cigarette.

Thai sugar is smuggled through the border.
Every
day, trucks - each carrying 600-900 sugar bags – run to Chrey Thom in
Kandal province, Cambodia, which is opposite the border gate of Khanh
Binh in An Phu district, An Giang, waiting for opportunities to enter
Vietnam. Sugar is then transported by boat in Binh Di River, which runs between Cambodia and Vietnam.
The pay for transporting a sugar bag from Cambodia to warehouses in An Giang is VND30,000 ($1.5).
An Giang authorities have seized nearly 20 sugar trucks so far this year, totaling less than 400 tons.
Each day hundreds of cattle from Cambodia cross the Tinh Bien border gate to Vietnam.
The
hot spots for smuggled cattle are An Phu commune in Tinh Bien district
and Vinh Gia commune in Tri Ton district of An Giang province.

Whenever the domestic gasoline prices are lower than those in Cambodia, gasoline smuggling from Vietnam to Cambodia booms.
At peak times, millions of liters of gasolines are transported through the border.
"Now
the price of gasoline in Vietnam and Cambodia is not much different, so
smuggling of these goods are not serious,” a customs officer of Tinh
Bien district said.
