NOI (VNS) – Storm Son Tinh has turned into a tropical low after
killing three people, injuring 10 and damaging thousands of houses and
hectares of rice fields in northern and central coastal provinces.
The 180m television tower in Nam Dinh City was blown over, dozens of boats
were destroyed and thousands of people were evacuated, as winds hit 80kph,
the National Committee for Search and Rescue said.
The storm weaken into a tropical low this morning after
crossing the coast at Quang
Ninh Province.
The Central Hydro-Meteorology Centre said winds were expected to drop to
39kph at the eye and move northeast at 10kph over the next 12 hours from 10am
and dissipate.
Meanwhile, up to 300-400mm of rain inundated the northern provinces of Quang Ninh, Nam
Dinh, Hai Phong and Thai Binh. Many streets were flooded and trees uprooted.
The Central Flood and Disaster Control Steering
Committee said 1,500 soldiers were mobilised for search and rescue and to
help victims repair houses and recover production.
Earlier, 20 people in Hai Phong
City were rescued after
their boats sank, while on GFS Key Hawai drilling rig, 35 people, including
14 foreigners, became stranded on the rig because their boat "was
disconnected". The airforce is currently working on a rescue plan. – VNS
