Man held for blackmailing women with sex tapes

Police in Hanoi have detained a 24-year-old man who stole from two women after he threatened to publicize clips of him having sex with them.
Nguyen Tien Cuong, 24, who lives in Hoang Mai District, was arrested last Saturday for charges of “appropriating assets”, police said.

The two victims are Nguyen Thi Thu H., 21, and Hoang Thi N., 23, both from Lang Thuong Ward, Dong Da District.

Both young women told police that they had separately had sex with Cuong, who videotaped their lovemaking.

H. reported to police that Cuong forced her to write a promissory note of VND10 million (US$480) on January 28 and threatened that if she refused to do so, he would post a clip of them having sex on the Internet.

After H wrote the note, Cuong forced her to give him VND5.9 million and her ID card.

Similarly, Cuong forced N. to write a promissory note worth VND20 million and give him her motorbike as security. He later took an iPhone4 and VND500,000.

Several similar crimes have occurred recently.

In October 2012, police in Ho Chi Minh City detained a 22-year-old man, Vu Hoang Hai Thinh, for blackmailing his 19-year-old girlfriend, P.,  over a sex tape that was filmed in a hotel room.

He was caught red-handed taking VND200,000 ($9.8) and a cell phone from the victim.

Later, he used the clip to blackmail P. for money. He threatened to post the footage on the Internet if she failed to pay.

P. informed the police, and while Thinh was receiving the ransom ($10 and a cell phone) at Hoang Van Thu Park in Phu Nhuan District, he was arrested.

In May 2011, police in HCMC arrested Phan Van Huan, 22, for attempting to blackmail his ex-girlfriend’s mother by claiming he had a secret video of her daughter’s affair with him.

Huan was in love with a 16-year-old girl known only T. He took her to a guesthouse to have sex, and he used his cell phone to film part of their actions.

When the couple broke up, he sent a text message to T.’s mother threatening to publish the video if she did not give him VND500 million (US$25,000). After negotiating, the ransom was reduced to $500.

Huan was then arrested as he received the payment from the victim’s family.
