Vietnam’s most special trees and fruits in 2014 Buddha hand shaped grapefruits, tiny watermelons, purple longans, and giant tomatoes, sweet potatoes and squash were the  special fruits appearing on the market in 2014. Buddha hand-shaped grapefruits appeared for the first time at eight pagodas last month. They are the fruit of three years of research of a private company.   The first 1,000 to 3,000 hand-shaped pomeloes will be available on the market this lunar New Year. They will be exported in the near future.   This watermelon grew even though it was cut off from the tree for display on the altar. This watermelon was fresh for nine months. This is the product of a farmer named Le Van Quoi in Long Dinh hamlet, Long Thang commune, Lai Vung district, Dong Thap province. Quoi said he did not use any kind of preservative or any chemical substance.   These weird purple longans were created by a senior farmer in Soc Trang province, Mr. Tran Van Huy. He created this variety ten years ago.   For many years Huy planted this variety to serve his family only. This special species was just known recently when he displayed it at a tourism festival.   Ms. Pham Thi Thu Cuc in Lam Dong Province has a garden of giant tomatoes. Each tomato weighs from 600 g to 1 kg. Cuc is the first grower of giant tomato in Lam Dong.   In late September, southwestern people flocked to markets to buy this tree, called “air tree”. This ornamental species has just recently imported to Vietnam.This plant does not need soil to develop, just water and air. Its flowers are very beautiful.   These odd-shaped loopahs belong to a man in Binh Chanh District, Ho Chi Minh City.    In August, people flocked to the home of Mr. Tran Thanh Hai in Ea Kao commune, Buon Ma Thuot city, Dak Lak province to see this strange banana tree. Hai planted the tree one year ago.This banana bunch is over 2m long.   Mr. Tran Cong Tuan found a giant sweet potato in his garden this January. It is 4.3 kg in weight.    The giant squash fruits weighing up to 30-80 kg in My Tho commune, Phu My district, Binh Dinh province surprised anyone.   Tiny watermelons appeared in Vietnam this year, with the length of only 3cm.
