Two bridges in Vietnam
collapsed in separate accidents on Friday, after overloaded trucks crossed
them.
At around
6:00 am, a truck apparently overloaded with sand was passing a bridge in the
Central Highlands province of Dak Lak when it caused the structure to tumble
down into two pieces.
A schoolgirl
who was unfortunate enough to be riding an electric bicycle across the bridge
in Xuan Phu Commune, Ea Kar District, at that time fell to the river along
with the truck following the collapse.
The truck
driver, his assistant and the schoolgirl were immediately rushed to a local
hospital with multiple injuries.
Pham Van
Hoa, head of the police unit of Xuan Phu Commune, said officers are examining
the scene of the accident.
Police will
determine the volume of sand the truck was carrying and the damage to the
bridge so as to see how to handle the case, he added.
The collapsed
bridge has a loading capacity of only ten metric tons, while the truck is
believed to be loaded with up to 15 metric tons of sand at the time of the
accident, according to the police chief.
A little
more than an hour after the Dak Lak incident, a bridge in the northern
province of Yen Bai also gave way when a heavily loaded truck was crossing
it.
The vehicle
was carrying more than 30 metric tons of goods when it passed the Quan
Bridge, designed to withstand only eight metric tons, at around 7:15 am,
according to the provincial traffic safety committee.
The bridge
did not fully collapse, but the truck nearly overturned, creating a big crack
in the middle of the structure.
Local police
are investigating the case.
In the
meantime, Hung Cuong Co. Ltd., which operates the truck, is facing sanctions
from the transport department of the neighboring province of Phu Tho, where
the company is registered.
