Photo credit: Renew/Thanh Nien Three men were killed in Phu Yen Province Saturday when a Vietnam War-era bomb they were cutting to sell as metal scrap went off. Officials in the central province said the men, aged 16, 22 and 24, had found the bomb in a local river while fishing a few days earlier. They had hidden the bomb and decided to cut it open with a saw Saturday after drinking. A local resident, who said they died on the spot, informed authorities. Unexploded ordnance left from the war threatens a fifth of Vietnam’s land mass, and officials say explosions occur every day, many in central Vietnam. Deputy Minister of Defense Nguyen Chi Vinh said last October that the explosions kill more than 1,500 people every year and maim and injure 2,200 more. While some are accidental, many occur because poor people try to make ends meet by salvaging scrap metal from bombs. By Duc Huy, Thanh Nien News
