Leatherman multi-tool inventor talks to fans in city

Tim Leatherman, who invented the famous Leatherman multi-purpose tool, met Saturday with users of the versatile gadget in Ho Chi Minh City.
Almost 100 people attended a seminar in Phu Nhuan District during which Leatherman shared the story of how he created the tool, which includes about 20 functions such as pliers, screwdrivers, scissors, saws, and openers.
The 64-year-old American said that he perfected his hand tool in 1983, eight years after he first thought of creating it on a nine-month trip throughout Europe with his Vietnamese wife, Chau Leatherman.
But Vietnam is where Leatherman sowed the seed that eventually grew into the idea behind the development of the tool, which can help people fix things whenever and wherever they want without having to bring along bulky equipment, the inventor said.

Thanks to that versatility, in 2010 Time magazine ranked the Leatherman tool as one of the 100 greatest and most influential gadgets from 1923 on.

Leatherman’s company now sells about 2 million multi-tools per year and has revenue of US$100 million.

The entrepreneur demonstrated at the event how sharp the portable gadget was by using one to cut a steel nail into two pieces and sliced his business card seconds later.
Attendees asked Leatherman about the functions of the tool, pricing policy for Vietnam, and his plans for the Vietnamese market.
Leatherman tool fans said that they choose the device because it is strong and flexible, and many use it simply as a hobby. Many users have also created Leatherman tool groups to share personal experiences from using the gizmo.
Leatherman also took the chance to share his recipe for success with young Vietnamese, in addition to the presentation on the history of his brainchild.
