Fireworks
show brings chaos to Quang Ngai Province, six injured
Doctors confirmed
that six people were hospitalized on Tuesday for injuries caused by a
fireworks debacle in the central province of Quang Ngai.
Online cellphone footage circulated online depicting the
mishap in Pham Van Dong Square, during a celebration of the final evening of
the lunar calendar.
Thousands of people chaotically fled the square after
fireworks shoot into the crowd.
Two patients were transferred to Da Nang due to serious
facial burns, three others were admitted to Quang Ngai General Hospital and
another patient was discharged with minor burns, said the hospital director,
Pham Ngoc Lan.
“Three patients [in Quang Ngai] are in stable
condition,” he told the media.
Vuong Dinh Tam, 16,
said he was watching the display when blazing explosives suddenly whizzed
toward he and his friends.
“Fireworks were exploding everywhere; everyone was
terrified. I suffered burns on my chest and belly,” Tam said.
Quang Ngai authorities have yet to comment on the
incident.
Vietnam banned firecrackers in 1994 for safety and
security reasons while fireworks may only lawfully be discharged by
government agencies during competitions and special events.
