A young man has had his hand chopped off, and another has been severely injured in a violent motorbike chase in Ho Chi Minh City.
A fight broke out at around 8:40 pm on Sunday in front of a gas station in Go Vap District.
A group of eight youths riding on four motorbikes were reported by witnesses to have been on Pham Van Chieu Street when two other motorbikes carrying four people approached them from behind at high speed.
One of the chasers drew a homemade machete and slashed continuously at the head of 18-year-old Nguyen Van Phong, a member of the first group.
The victim instinctively raised his arms to protect his head from the attacks, and had his hand chopped clean off in the process
The attacker then turned to the victim’s friend, Bui Hoang Thien Phuong, who was trying to protect his friend from the ferocious strikes, slashing him multiple times until Phuong fell to the ground.
Another member of the first group then reportedly turned around and kicked the machete from the hands of the assailant, who then quickly drove from the scene with his gang.
Onlookers immediately soaked Phong’s severed hand in ice and drove the two victims to hospital for medical aid.
Go Vap Police arrived at the site shortly after to investigate the incident and interview witnesses.
Phong, a witness at the scene, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper the assault was so violent that nobody dared to intervene.
