Vietnamese-Russian
beauty queen faces fraud charges
Ho Chi Minh City police on Tuesday
recommended that prosecutors press fraud charges against a former
Vietnamese-Russian beauty queen for allegedly cheating a businessman out of
more than VND16 billion (US$717,000).
The
police has wrapped up investigations into the case involving Truong Ho Phuong
Nga, 29. She was arrested in March last year.
Nga
reportedly emigrated to Russia with her family when she was 12. After winning
a beauty contest for Vietnamese in Russia in 2007, she returned to Vietnam to
work for a communications company in 2009 and also did some modeling work.
She
starred in a couple of music videos and films and emceed a few charity, film
and beauty events.
According
to police, she allegedly told a local businessman, referred to as M., that
she had many contacts who could help him buy houses in Ho Chi Minh City at
low prices.
The
man then transferred VND6 billion ($268,860) to her account to buy a house in
District 5.
But
Nga later told him the deal fall through due to some paperwork issues.
She
still managed to convince him to send more than VND10 billion ($448,000) for
another house.
After
failing to get the promised house, M. demanded his money back. Since Nga
allegedly kept evading him, he started investigating and found the house did
not exist.
He
reported the case to the police, who then summoned Nga for questioning.
The
woman claimed to have returned the money to M., and produced documents as
proof. But police later found the documents to be fake.
Nguyen
Duc Thuy Dung, 27, who faked documents that purportedly showed Nga having
returned the money to the victim, also faces fraud charges.
