30-year-old Nguyen Thi Nga, of Binh Thuan’s Tanh Linh District, received the sentence at her trial held by the court on Friday. According to the indictment of the local prosecutor’s office, Nga wanted to kill Huynh Thi Lao, 67, her mother-in-law, since they had a lot of conflicts during a long time living in the same house. On the morning of June 2, when Lao was working on a rice field, Nga put some rat poison into a jug that contained drinking water for her family, and she left the house. Lao returned home at noon and drank some water from the jug but she spit the water out after noticing its strange taste. Lao called some of her neighbors to join her in examining the water in the jug and they later concluded that it had been tainted with a poison. The case was reported to police who later questioned Nga and she pleaded guilty of attempting to kill Lao.
Nga told the court that Lao had often asked Nga's husband to
beat her whenever there was a quarrel between the two women.
In related news, the court the same day sentenced 54-year-old Nguyen Bao Thanh, also of Tan Linh District, to six years in jail for charges of murder. Thanh put some pesticide into the well of a neighbor, Ho Cuu, in an attempt to kill Cuu and his family members. Luckily, Thanh’s inhumane act was caught by a local who immediately reported the case to Cuu’s family and police, who arrested Thanh later and he admitted to his crime. |
