Traditional play revamped to regain audience enthusiasm

  •  The Hanoi Cheo Theatre has introduced a new version of an old play which depicts the Trung sisters' revolt against the Chinese invasion to mark the 2,000th anniversary of the event.

The theatre has invested VND1 billion (USD48,000) in the recreation of the historical cheo play, and the script softened by the romance between Trung Trac and Thi Sach.
Much of the money was spent on new costume and stage designs. They also paid a large sum to secure the involvement of the much sought-after choreographer Tan Loc and designer Sy Hoang.
In addition, the main roles, to the shock of many, were given to young artists such as Thuc Khanh as Trung Trac and Thao Quyen as Trung Nhi.
"At first, I was worried about my ability to play the role, but due to the support of the cast and crew I am now confident," Khanh said.

Like Cải Lương in the southern region, Cheo has lost popularity among the northern Vietnamese public. The new play, which injects modern sensibilities, has been seen as an attempt to recapture the interest of young audiences.
Meritorious Artist Quoc Anh is the only veteran actor in the cast. Anh said he was interested in a historical play with a modern touch.
The play, titled "Vuong Nu Me Linh" will be performed at Dai Nam Theatre from August 21 to 30 and then on the stage of Hanoi Opera House from September 5. The play will be also sent to the cheo festival in October in Haiphong City.
