Police in central Nam Dinh City have detained a local young man who splashed acid on five members of a family at the same time, after he was prevented from flirting a 10-year-old girl whose father is the man’s employer.

24-year-old Dang Van Hai was arrested right after he splashed a mug of 1.5 liters of concentrated acid on five members of a family who were having dinner at their house at 279 Dien Bien Street at 7 pm on August 3.

Le Minh Dai, the house’s owner, Nguyen Thi Thanh Huong, 35, Dai’s wife, Le Thi Ly, 60, Huong’s mother, and two children of the couple were all affected by the acid splash.

Dai, 38, suffered serious injuries in his eyes and is being treated at the Central Eye Institute, while his two daughters, Quynh Trang and Quynh Anh, 10 and six years old respectively, got many severe burns over their bodies and are being treated at the National Burn Institute in Hanoi.

Huong and her mother who got slight burns are receiving treatment at the same hospital. The two women had run after Hai and seized him after he splashed the acid.

According to the case file, Hai told police that he “fell in love” with 10-year-old Trang when he was working as repairer for Dai at Dai’s electronics shop a few years ago.

At that time, Dai often sent text messages to her mobile phone to flirt the girl, who later showed the messages to her parents. Dai then advised that Hai stop courting his daughter.

As Hai continued courting Trang, Dai fired him and Hai later got a job at another shop near Dai’s and tried to seek ways to take revenge on Dai.

In July 2013, Hai bought a can of 10 liters of strong acid and hid it at the shop he was working. On July 28, Hai extracted about 1.5 liters of acid from the can into a mug, and on August 3 he splashed the acid on the five victims.

Currently, the two girls are being treated at the Emergency and Intensive Care Unit of the National Burn Institute.
