Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam was addressing the opening session of the conference in China's southern province of Hainan yesterday. He stated that nations, big or small, rich or poor, need a stable environment for development. Every dispute and conflict needs to be resolved through peaceful measures in compliance with the international law and with sincerity and trust. Win-win co-operation, mutual respect and trust, and responsibility-sharing in common issues are indispensable for the region and the whole world in order to secure sustainable growth, Dam pointed out. Viet Nam has put in all its efforts to work in tandem with other nations and partners in that spirit and towards achieving that goal, he remarked. The Vietnamese official highlighted the fact that Asia was embarking on a mission to grow strongly not just for itself, but also for its increasingly important role in addressing common issues faced by humanity. He believes that Asian economies are looking towards inclusive and sustainable growth, which is in line with the common trend across the world. To seek a new direction and development model backed by sustainable growth, creativity is paramount along with technological innovation, as a driver, Dam said. He elaborated that during the process, connectivity among economies and regions should be accelerated through co-operation frameworks, such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and other free trade agreements. New vistas Chinese Premier Li Keqiang yesterday said China will forge ahead with other Asian countries, sharing weal and woe, to open up new vistas from the continent's development. Li called on Asian countries to find fresh ideas to re-energise the region in the face of new developments and challenges. Asian countries need to build a community of shared interests, common destiny and shared responsibilities, Li told delegates. "Economic integration is central to achieving common development in Asia," said the premier. Asian countries need to work together to further liberalise trade and facilitate investment, as well as upgrade regional and sub-regional co-operation, he added. The premier also highlighted the importance of a peaceful and stable regional environment for Asia to progress and develop. He urged Asian countries to build consensus, make active efforts and jointly fulfil responsibilities. Li underscored China's commitment to peaceful development and its resolution to defend its territorial sovereignty. "We will give full support to initiatives that help strengthen maritime co-operation," Li said. As an international non-governmental and non-profit organisation founded in 2001, the BFA works to promote regional economic integration and bring Asian countries closer to their development goals.
