A woman of Vietnamese origin and her two children were among the 298 people who died on board Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, authorities and family members have confirmed. MH17 was reportedly brought down by a missile over eastern Ukraine late on Thursday night. All 298 people on board, among them nationals from at least a dozen countries, were killed. On Friday, Vietnam’s U.N. ambassador Le Hoai Trung told an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council on the downed Malaysian Airlines jet that three unidentified victims were from his country. Vietnam calls for an urgent and transparent investigation in the the shooting down of the jet. Malaysia Airlines and relevant governments said the passengers included 192 Dutch, 29 Malaysians, 28 Australians, 12 Indonesians, 10 Britons, four Germans, four Belgians, three Vietnamese, three Filipinos and one person each from the US, Canada, New Zealand and Hong Kong. Malaysia Airlines regional vice president Huib Gorter told reporters at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport the carrier was making an initial payment of $5,000 to families of all victims to cover their immediate costs.
