A summary of what you need to know in Vietnam today:
Politics
-- Second Lady of the United States, Dr. Jill Biden, arrived Sunday in Hanoi, her second stop on a four-country visit to Asia to engage government and civil society partners in issues related to economic empowerment and educational opportunities for women and girls.
-- Le Thanh Hai, Party Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City, returned to the city after a five-day visit to the U.S. on Sunday, saying the trip was a huge success as it will boost cooperation between the Vietnamese metropolis and California.
Society
-- A suspect in the killing of four people of a family in a forest in the north-central province of Nghe An on July 2 was arrested on Sunday, police said.
-- Three people in a seven-seat car died in a rear-end collision between the vehicle and a trailer truck parked on the National Highway No.1 part that passes the north-central province of Thanh Hoa on Sunday.
-- Two young men, aged 22 and 18, drowned when they tried to save a 10-year-old boy, who slipped into the Ca River in the north-central province of Nghe An on Sunday.
-- Doan Huynh Chau, residing in Ho Chi Minh City, has been caught by police mixing Chivas Regal 12 year old whisky with coloring and other substances and distributed the products as Chivas Regal 21 and 18 year old whisky at much higher prices.
Business
-- Harem 2, a five-star cruise ship, has been put into use in the central Vietnamese city of Da Nang, offering services around the iconic Han River and to Son Tra Peninsula and Cu Lao Cham Island in the neighboring province of Quang Nam.
-- Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung signed a directive on Sunday to remove Nguyen Xuan Son from the post of the chairman of state-run oil and gas behemoth PetroVietnam. Son has reportedly been summoned many times by police for reasons not yet to be disclosed.
Lifestyle
-- Hi-5, an Australian children's musical group, will be in Ho Chi Minh City on August 5 to promote the 15th season of a television series of the same name, which is currently on air on Vietnam’s You TV channel.
Sports
-- Hoang Anh Gia Lai have earned their first win in the past 12 games, as they beat Becamex Binh Duong 2-1 in the 17th round of the 2015 V-League 1, Vietnam’s top-tier football tournament, on Sunday.
