Photo: Linh Linh  At least three people have been killed and thousands of others evacuated after heavy rains hit Quang Ninh Province Sunday, causing record flooding. The victims were Nguyen Thi Lan, 27, and her two daughters aged four and seven, who drowned in their house in Cam Pha town, local media reported. Their bodies were found by rescuers who were checking every submerged house in the town. Witnesses said Lan’s house was inundated after the drains were unable to carry away the massive volume of water dumped by the rains. Her husband had been away when the tragedy occurred, they said. According to the National Center for Hydro-meteorological Forecast, a low pressure area triggered rain from 4 p.m. Sunday. Cam Pha received 555mm of rain. In many places the waters rose to four meters, reaching the second floor of many houses. Hundreds of families in Ha Long town and Van Don District were also evacuated due to the inundation and threats of landslides. In Ha Long, two houses collapsed though without human casualties. The Quang Ninh People’s Committee has mobilized rescue forces to help residents and banned all boats and ships, including at the popular tourist destinations of Ha Long and Bai Tu Long bays, from sailing out to sea. Relief efforts are continuing. Quang Ninh is situated around 160 km (100 miles) from Hanoi and on the northern coast and often suffers from extreme weather, including typhoons from the East Sea. On June 24 Typhoon Kijura hit Quang Ninh and Hai Phong and caused torrential rains in nearly all northern provinces that triggered landslides and flash floods that killed at least 11 people.
