town under 4m of water after record downpour, 3 killed
At least three
people have been killed and thousands of others evacuated after heavy rains
hit
The victims were Nguyen Thi Lan, 27, and her two
daughters aged four and seven, who drowned in their house in Cam Pha town,
local media reported.
Their bodies were found by rescuers who were checking
every submerged house in the town.
Witnesses said Lan’s house was inundated after the
drains were unable to carry away the massive volume of water dumped by the
rains. Her husband had been away when the tragedy occurred, they said.
According to the
Cam Pha received 555mm of rain. In many places the
waters rose to four meters, reaching the second floor of many houses.
Hundreds of families in Ha Long town and Van Don
District were also evacuated due to the inundation and threats of landslides.
In Ha Long, two houses collapsed though without human
casualties.
The Quang Ninh People’s Committee has mobilized rescue
forces to help residents and banned all boats and ships, including at the
popular tourist destinations of Ha Long and Bai Tu Long bays, from sailing
out to sea.
Relief efforts are continuing.
