Dirty food delivered straight to nurseries
A food processing facility in Hanoi have been suspended for providing unhygienic food to many local nurseries.
Hai Anh food processing facility at Trung Van Market is one of the well-known distributors to many local nurseries for years. Pham Thi Thu Anh, owner of the facility, said their food were expensive because they were fresh. Their shrimp cost VND450,000 (USD20.50) per kilo and basa fish cost over VND100,000 per kilo.
Anh said she had business licences to sell meat, aqua-products, beverages and vegetables. However, according to the locals, the food processing facility at Trung Van Market is actually an electronic shop. Whenever there is an inspection, it will be temporarily transformed into a food processing facility.
In reality, all the work is being done at an unnamed kiosk at Long Bien Market where the conditions fail to meet regular standards. The fish are left lying on dirty ground near running waste water.
Anh then let it slip that, "Why hands of the sellers look like they are ulcerating? It's not because of the water, it's because they often have to work with chemicals. I tell you all sellers at market work with chemicals."
After the case was discovered by Lao Dong Newspaper at Hai Anh food processing facility, it has been followed by the inter-department inspectorate in Nam Tu Liem District.
When being inspected, owners of Hai Anh were unable to produce necessary hygiene certificates or origin of their food or their suppliers. The food processing area failed to meet requirement so the inspectors destroyed the meat found. The facility has been suspended.

A conference to review the second phase of the Netherlands-funded project on strengthening profession oriented higher education (POHE) was organised in Hanoi on June 23.

Addressing the event, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Bui Van Ga said the Vietnam Netherlands Higher Education Project – phase 1 started in 2005.
The first phase of the project conducted 10 profession-oriented training programmes in various fields, including tourism and hospitality, construction, agro-forestry, electronics and information communication and technology (ICT) at eight target universities.
Building on the positive outcomings of the first phase, the second phase of the POHE has been implemented since 2012, Ga said.
The project is part of the activities to implement Resolution No.29 on education reform and the Law on Higher Education in a more market-relevant way, Ga said.
The Deputy Minister urged the management board to develop training documents out of the piloted programmes and target institutions to disseminate the project’s outcomings across higher education sector.
According to Director of the project Bui Anh Tuan, the project has made significant improvements in training among the target universities as well as the sector.
During the conference, a joint statement on developing profession-oriented higher education was signed between the Ministry of Education and Training and representatives from the eight key institutions majoring in teachers’ training, agriculture, and forestry studies.
After four years of implementation, the project has currently run 49 training programmes and established a close-knit relationship between educational institutions and enterprises.

Over 2 million benefit from healthy heart project
Over two million people in Ho Chi Minh City are expected to benefit from a project for a healthy heart which was launched in the city on June 22.
The project will be carried out in Districts 8, 12, Go Vap and Thu Duc until the end of 2018 by the PATH global health organisation, Novartis Fund and the municipal Health Department.
Addressing the launching ceremony, Truong Le Van Ngoc from the Agency of Health Examination and Treatment under the Health Ministry said the project is an international effort to contribute significantly to controlling hypertension and other non-communicative diseases in Vietnam.
The project, which is in line with the national strategy on preventing non-communicative diseases from 2015-2025, will help locals early detect high blood pressure for timely treatment and long-term control of the disease using a community-based approach.
According to Deputy Director of the municipal Health Department Nguyen Huu Hung, the project will set up screening spots in the community, thus enabling people to monitor their blood pressure themselves.
A database on people with the condition will be set up. Patients will be referred to health care facilities for treatment.
A network of trained volunteers will be established to provide consultation services for people.
Digital technology will be applied to facilitate self-monitoring and enhance interaction between patients and health care service providers.

In Vietnam, high-blood pressure cause over 90,000 deaths per year.
Over one quarter of the adult population of the country have high-blood pressure. However, less than half of them are aware of their condition. Only 11 percent of the treated cases achieve the target blood pressure.
VAS opens 7th campus in north of Ho Chi Minh City
The northern part of Ho Chi Minh City is fast becoming a promising location for investors to initiate construction projects aimed at raising the economic and social standing of the area. Some of the districts included in this northern catchment zone include District 12, and Go Vap, Hoc Mon, and Cu Chi districts.
The VAS campus was carefully designed to foster students’ physical as well as mental development
Go Vap district is a gateway for transport connections, accommodating business and trade in the city. Accounting for 20 per cent of the total population of Ho Chi Minh City, the district’s population of nearly two million makes it a huge potential consumer market.
In September 2015, Vietnam-Australia International School (VAS) acknowledged the potential here by building its 7th campus in the centre of Go Vap. Located in the residential project City Land Garden Hills, this facility has the most modern construction within the VAS system.
On May 25, the campus welcomed 2,000 students to get a taste for the ultra-modern educational project Garden Hills Mega Campus. Enrollment for kindergarten to high school students for the school year 2016-2017 will begin in July 2016.
With a total area of 14,480 square metres, including nearly 4,500sq.m of lush green spaces, the Garden Hills Mega Campus was designed by architect Nguyen Dinh Gioi of Nha Dan Interior Design Company. The campus is built according to green architectural trends, with green areas and outdoor spaces making up 60 per cent of the total area. The campus has 80 classrooms which are equipped with modern facilities. In addition, there are several specific-function rooms such as computer rooms, laboratories, a library, kitchens, music/art rooms, as well as a gym. VAS also has two swimming pools, a children’s playground, an inter-level playground, a soccer field, a basketball court, as well as a theatre-style multi-purpose hall. Combined, these facilities will foster the comprehensive development of students – both physically and intellectually.
With the rapid development of Vietnam’s economy through the signing of regional and international trade agreements, educational experts say that one of the main challenges for educational programmes in Vietnam is enabling students to gain access to the global knowledge, skills, and values that form the educational grounding of a global citizen. In this way, VAS has drawn the attention of parents by teaching the seven core values of Excellence, Confidence, Passion, Integrity, Respect, Teamwork, and National Pride. A special feature of these seven core values is the National Pride component, whereby students are encouraged to become more confident in their personal development, and become more harmonised with the global environment.
As director of the Garden Hills Mega Campus, David McLaughlin will be in charge of the management and supervision of all teaching and learning activities. He has 35 years’ experience working as a lecturer at universities in the UK, the US, and Canada. Additionally, he was a senior leader in several school systems in the UK, Dubai, and most recently Kenya.
Marcel van Miert, VAS’ executive chairman, said that “The construction of a VAS campus in Go Vap will meet the needs of the growing number of students hoping to attend the international education programme of Cambridge alongside the national education programme. The team of excellent teachers, managers, and staff in this ultra-modern campus will contribute to the quality of teaching and training in Ho Chi Minh City. I believe this campus will provide an optimal choice for parents and students within the area, with a more comfortable learning environment, international-standard programmes and reasonable fees.”
