Photo by Dtinews According to both national and international forecasts, the typhoon was at its strongest when it hit Vietnam’s Truong Sa archipelago on Sunday afternoon, with wind speeds over 130kph (81mph). The storm is approaching Southern Vietnam at a speed of 25kph, and is forecast to hit provinces from Ba Ria-Vung Tau to Ca Mau carrying winds of around 90kph on the late night of December 25. Coastal provinces from Khanh Hoa to Kien Giang have issued offshore fishing ban while Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Ho Chi Minh City, Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau, and Kien Giang are preparing mass evacuation plans. The Government held a meeting in Hanoi on December 24 to discuss ways to cope with this powerful storm, the 16th recorded this year. Official statistics show flooding and storms left 390 people dead or missing in Vietnam in the first 11 months of 2017, and caused damage worth around US$2.34 billion. VGP
