A fitness and yoga instructor from South
Africa died on January 9 in central Vietnam after
allegedly being bitten by an unidentified insect.
Tuoitrenews has received confirmation that Paul Underwood
died.
Hailing from Cape Town, the man
was enjoying holiday in the Phong Nha Ke Bang famous tourist area (recognized
as a UNESCO World Heritage Site) in central Vietnam. It is suspected he had
earlier been bitten by an unidentified insect when he was in Hanoi.
Mr. Underwood enjoyed travelling and surfing and was an
energetic and muscular man.
Been sick for many days
Ms. Le Thi Bich, owner of the Phong Nha Farmstay in Quang Binh
province's Bo Trach district, told Tuoitrenews that around 10 days ago, she
received the South African guest but since her hotel was fully booked, she
told him to check into the Thanh Dat Hotel.
“He told me that he had had a fever in the last several days
since the time he was in Hanoi
because he was bitten by an insect. On the fourth day after staying at Thanh
Dat Hotel, he called me [Bich had given him her business card] and told me he
had a high fever and asked me the direction to a hospital”, Bich recalled.
“We then called a car to take him to hospital but he refused.
He said the staff at Thanh Dat Hotel did not speak much English, so we
finally took him to our Phong Nha Farmstay and checked him in”, Bich told
Tuoitrenews.

There, he exhibited signs of fatigue and soreness in the leg
so Ms. Bich recommended him the Vietnam-Cuba
Dong Hoi
Hospital for some
tests. He came along with a Polish tourist.
When he was back and still had the fever, Bich ordered a car
to take him to the Hue Central Hospital
in Hue city of Thua Thien Hue province.
After staying one night at the Hue Central
Hospital, Mr. Underwood
died on January 9.
The hotel owner said she was not sure if he was killed by the
insect bite or not and where he was bitten.
