Photo: provided by their relatives Due to a disagreement with her South Korean mother-in-law a few months ago, a young Vietnamese woman hanged herself in South Korea’s Gumi City last Wednesday. A few days later, her husband committed suicide, too. Nguyen Thi Diem Trinh, 23, a native of Thoi Tan Commune, Thoi Lai District, Can Tho City was found hanging dead in her rented house in Gumi city on January 16. She hanged herself with a belt. Trinh’s 3-year-old son, Bin, was sent back to Vietnam by her husband a few months ago and is being taken care of by her elder sister, Nguyen Thi Thien in Can Tho City. In 2008, with a view to helping support her poor family, Trinh left Can Tho for Ho Chi Minh City to meet a group of South Koreans who wanted to seek Vietnamese wives. Trinh was later selected by a man who was 20 years older than her. They married and the man, who worked in the field of construction, took Trinh to Jeju Island of South Korea to live. One year later, Trinh’s younger sister also married a South Korean man and left Vietnam for Korea with her husband. In the first year of marriage, Trinh and her husband lived in their own house, but after she gave birth to Bin, the couple moved to her husband’s mother’s house to live with her. Bin has been suffering from a brain-related disease so he cannot speak. Therefore, the mother-in-law wanted Trinh to have one more child, but Trinh disagreed, saying she had to save money for Bin’s treatment.  A conflict had since begun between the two women, Thien said. “More than a month ago, Trinh’s husband found his wife manifesting signs of depression, so he advised Trinh to return to Vietnam to visit her family. However, Trinh did not come back to Vietnam but came to Gumi City and rented a house near her younger sister’s house”, Thien said. “Several days later, Trinh’s husband phoned my mother asking her to take Bin to Vietnam and take care of the boy,” Thien said. After that, whenever Trinh called back to Vietnam to ask for information about her son, Trinh’s mother, Pham Thi Tuyet Hai, asked her to return to the house of her husband’s family. Trinh’s young sister also advised the same thing when they met in Gumi. “My younger sister committed suicide possibly because she felt she had reached a deadlock in her life,” Thien said.  Hai flew to South Korea a few days ago to carry out procedures to repatriate her daughter’s body to Vietnam. However, as soon as she arrived in South Korea, Hai received another bad news that Trinh’s husband had killed himself, too, by taking an excessive amount of sleeping pills. In his suicide note, Trinh’s husband said he wanted Trinh’s body be brought to Jeju Island. Therefore, Hai has decided not to take Trinh's body to Vietnam since she respected her deceased son-in-law’s wish. TuoitreNews
