“Our story takes place high up in the alps.
There where the snow is immaculate, where chamois chase marmots, where the summits touch the clouds.
High up in a peaceful village – until the day the Germans arrive.
It’s the story of a lonely boy and a wild dog.
The story of Sébastien who tames Belle.
It’s the adventure of an indestructible friendship.

The production of paper made from bamboo has a long tradition in some Asian countries, but the process is usually completed with the moulding of the paper. But this is just the beginning for Truc Chi – a new form of art: the artists of the group interact with the wet structure of the paper in the frame and use water pressure and other techniques to change the surface. In this way, unique images are created, which some artists further process through brush or collage techniques.
The person behind the new discovery of bamboo paper for Contemporary Art is artist Phan Hai Bang, who developed new techniques for the treatment of the material. In 2012, Phan Hai Bang, together with students of the Hue College of Arts formed the association Viet Nam Truc Chi Art (“Nghệ Thuật Trúc Chỉ Việt Nam”). The exhibition “Truc Chi – Listen To The River” presents bamboo paper artworks for the first time in the Goethe-Institut Hanoi from July 1-15, 2016.
As part of an artist talk on July 2, Phan Hai Bang and Dr. Nguyen Nghia Phuong of the Vietnam Fine Arts University will explain the new term “Trucchigraphy” (“Đồ Họa Trúc Chỉ”), show some examples and have a discussion with the audience.
Want to learn more and try out the techniques to process the bamboo paper yourself? Apply for our workshop on July 2 and a final workshop on July 14. The minimum age for participation is 14 years. The workshop is held in Vietnamese. Applications should be sent until June 28 to Mrs Tran Thanh Huong, info@hanoi.goethe.org.

Talk with Historian Liam Kelley: “The Alternative Origin Story”
Sun 03 Jul 2016, 2.30 – 6 pm
1st floor, Hanoi Creative City
01 Luong Yen, Hanoi
“The Alternative Origin Story: How a New Story about Vietnamese Origins Emerged in the 20th Century” – a talk with historian Liam Kelley.
Virtually every human society today has a story about where it came from, or what we can call an “origin story”. In the case of Vietnam, one could say that the story about  Thần Nông, Kinh Dương Vương, Lạc Long Quân and the Hùng Kings is a kind of origin story. However, there was a new origin story that emerged in the 20th century that  argued that the ancestors of the Vietnamese were agriculturalists (người nông nghiệp) who migrated into the region to get away from pastoralists (người du mục) to the  north. This talk will examine how and why this “alternative origin story” emerged in the 20th century.
The talk will be held in English with Vietnamese translation.
Liam Kelley is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He teaches about Southeast Asian history, and researches and writes about Vietnamese history. Recently he has been researching about the efforts to discover the origins of the Vietnamese by various people in modern times, from French scholars during the colonial period to various Vietnamese scholars in the post-colonial era.
