The coastal Hai Phong City has plan to evacuate around 3,000 people before the tropical typhoon Jebi is forecast to land in the northern Vietnam from the East Sea tomorrow.
Coastguard forces in coordination with local authorities have so far helped 1,000 move to safe places, said Bui Trung Nghia – chairman of the People’s Committee of Cat Hai District in the city.
In addition, almost 3,000 meters of sea dikes in Cat Hai have been strengthened.
Moving at a speed of about 20 kph, Jebi -- the fifth storm coming in Vietnam -- is forecast to pass through the Chinese island of Hainan on late Friday and at 4am tomorrow it may be seen in the Tonkin Gulf, about 230 km east-southeast of the coastal area from Quang Ninh to Nam Dinh province.
At 4 pm on August 3, the typhoon will get close to the coast of Vietnam’s northeastern provinces, with winds of up to 74 kph and gusts of 102 kph.
The storm will later land in the region from Quang Ninh to Thai Binh Province, and possibly including Nam Dinh, according to the National Hydro-meteorological Forecasting Center.
