Broken trans-Pacific

internet users reported disruptions and slowdowns in international
connections on Tuesday morning after an undersea cable broke for the second
time this year at around midnight.
The Asia American Gateway (AAG)
cable accommodates most international connections for Vietnamese Internet
providers like FPT Telecom, VNPT, and Viettel, according to managers of the
cable.
Nguyen Van Khoa, general director of
FPT Telecom, said Asia American Gateway’s experts believe the rupture
occurred somewhere near Hong Kong, adding they are finding it difficult to
exactly locate the break due to bad weather caused by Typhoon Kalmaegi.
Khoa also said the damaged cable
incident won't affect Vietnamese users as seriously as in July given that
internet service providers have expanded the international bandwidth of their
back-up cables.
