Photo: Duc Tien A South African woman died on the spot after her motorbike allegedly crashed into a truck in downtown Ho Chi Minh City early Sunday, marking the second traffic fatality involving foreigners in the southern hub in one week. The woman was driving on Ton Duc Thang Street in District 1 at nearly 1 a.m. when the accident happened at the Nguyen Hue crossroads. News website VietNamNet quoted eyewitnesses as saying that her motorbike crashed head-on into the truck. The truck ran over her and her motorbike, killing her on the spot, according to eyewitnesses. Ho Chi Minh City police have identified the victim as Chani Cawood, a 24-year-old South African national. Nguyen Van Hoan, the 28-year-old truck driver, said he was hired to transport soil to District 2. “I picked a xe om (motorbike taxi) to the police station to report the accident right after the crash,” he said. The cause of accident is still under investigation. Last Sunday (September 21), Brazilian American Otavio Fleury also died on the street at the Dinh Tien Hoang-Dien Bien Phu crossroads in District 3 as he drove his 250cc motorbike and hit the Lotteria outlet wall on the sidewalk.
