But most importantly, it allows us to live more slowly. The dance demonstrates the story of an individual growing up during the significant changes in society. From these influences, his inner conflicts start to appear and develop. He cannot just point and tell, or trace back to the root of the problem to solve it. During the progress, the impact from outer consequences and inner instincts, the torn between senses and emotions drive his conflicts to grow stronger. Our character starts to find a way to fight against the imbalance of the extremes, trying to play the role of a judge to balance out the senses and emotions in order to control his feelings and to solve inner problems. However, from being too absorbed with chasing these invisible conflicts, one day he stops realising what is happening around and becomes isolated in his own world. She already started studying Dance as professional dancer at the Vietnam Dance College when she was 10 years old and graduated in 1996 with honors. She studied and worked as a dancer and choreographer abroad in Australia and France. Tran Ly Ly is one of the best-known choreographers for contemporary dance in Vietnam. Her first long piece “One Day” which she produced in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Vietnam was chosen for the Europe Day in Vietnam 2006. With “Zen” and “Burning Man`s Figure” she sparkled a big discussion on contemporary dance in Vietnam and in 2013 received the 1st prize in the young Choreographer Competition. Her dance pieces continue to receive important prizes in Vietnam. The performance proposes a vigorous and vibrant encounter with classical ballet in the context of a dynamic and youthful Vietnamese society. This performance is in the framework of Europe Meets Asia in Contemporary Dance 2014. A group of 7 Vietnamese performers challenges our perspective on the codified language of classical ballet. Hanoi Stardust confronts our perception of inherited and accepted codes of beauty and virtuosity with emerging and surprising codes of the present. Through obstinate repetition and variation of movement, the performers “drill” into accepted, standardized forms of beauty and virtuosity; elements of classical language are negotiated to reveal individual deviations from collective routines and acquired patterns. Hanoi Stardust expands on the drive to be alive, in movement, and stitches a lively minefield of relations between individuality and uniformity. In 2002 the German choreographer Arco Renz founded the Brussels based ensemble Kobalt Works and develops since then dance pieces based on the central concept of “abstract dramaturgy”, which focuses on the dialog of the body with the parameters of time and space to explore the emotional potential of the abstraction. The main emphasis on his work is the transcultural and multidisciplinary co-operations between European and Asian Artists. His piece “Crack” with the Cambodian group Amrita was honored with the ZKB Patronage Prize on the Theater Festival 2012 in Zurich. Arco’s choreographs are characterized by their intense physicality and explore the emotional potential of movement, together with the interaction between movement, light, video and music. In addition to the work as a choreographer, he developed dance education through numerous workshops and is a guest lecturer worldwide. Renowned British movie reviewer Mark Kermode, said: “I shed a tear within the first 10 minutes, and spent the rest of the movie beaming like a gibbering, love-struck fool.” The film promises to charm local audiences through its mesmerising camera work capturing the incredible beauty of Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland, also home to the Fringe, the world’s largest arts festival. The high quality continues with Not Another Happy Ending, set in Glasgow, a comedy about writer’s block. Jane Lockhart cannot write when she is happy. As she is working on the follow-up to her best-selling debut novel, Jane finds herself stuck trying to finish the final chapter. Tom Duvall, the editor of a struggling publishing company, is forced to make her incredibly unhappy. Ae Fond Kiss and For those in Peril, though contrasting in genres, are both very close to the heart of Vietnamese culture. Ae Fond Kiss is a love story between Roisin, a white woman and Casim, a Pakistani young man whose family have arranged for him to marry his cousin. They start a relationship but Casim is torn between following his heart and being a good son. Set in an insular Scottish community, For Those in Peril tells a tale of woe as it portrays how local superstition can ruin a young man’s life as he is blamed for the unexplained tragedy of a shipwreck. Shell “casts a spell with its portrait of cramped lives on a Scottish petrol station forecourt. It keeps the tale on a steady simmer right through to the closing moments, when it spits and sputters into melodrama” (The Guardian). Since the 1970s like in the U.S. in German-speaking countries and under the symbol of the rainbow, a political, “queer” movement has formed up fighting for its rights, for the societal and political recognition of being queer. Today and in these countries it looks like as if this movement has been arrived in the midst of the societal mainstream. But what role does art play in the development of this movement? And to ask in reverse: which role does this movement play in contemporary art? Because a lot of artists have a queer background but are not necessarily making “queer art” whereupon it can be asked what “queer art” might be. However there are also artists who take their queer identity and/or their political understanding as a starting point for their artistic practice and who thereby contribute to societal change, to change perspectives. In this lecture some examples of queer art productions in terms of single positions and exhibitions in German-speaking countries will be introduced and discussed. Built on his previous series, the artist continues to be inspired by themes of memories, history, and cultural heritage, from ancient towers at Angkor Wat and sporadic village communal houses in Vietnam’s rural north, to old costumes used by emperors and royal families during Vietnam’s Le and Trinh dynasties in the 17th century. Thang’s paintings can be viewed as a conscious choice in presenting his own world. For him, painting is a kind of behavior that neither glamourizes nor represents the world. Painting is to understand the world. In his understanding, the world appears as neither Eastern nor Western. Rather, understanding is a process, where both the East and the West as two different world views become each other’s substance and effect, means and end, structure and form. Ha Manh Thang is 34 years old and one of Vietnam’s most important young and upcoming artists. He graduated from the Hanoi Institute of Fine Art in 2004 and has taken part in international exhibitions in Singapore, Germany, Hungary, and the USA, and his works are in the permanent collection of the Singapore Art Museum.
