The relationship between mind, body and the physical environment has been a constant topic inside the studios of Le Phi Long, Lai Thi Dieu Ha and Nguyen Van Du over the last near 6 months. Nguyen Van Du found himself transporting back to the studios pounds of fresh beef from a local abattoir, that would be cooked and served with his local flair and then the discussion around the table of artists would turn towards the question of violence in his work. His large-scale canvases reveal a controlled horror in slaughter, thick with gestures of oil in red and pink as if his brush is a knife of destruction. For Le Phi Long, the exploitation of the land and the upheaving of ancestral communities for socio-economic progress are of particular concern. Long spent much time during his residency with the remaining families who struggle to eke out a living in Can Gio, a UNESCO natural reserve. Working with sculpture, photography, performance and drawing, his art subtly refers to the trauma of industrializing societies where systems of finance govern supreme with irreversible social and natural effects. Understanding the occurrence and effects of trauma is also of key focus in the art of Lai Thi Dieu Ha, though here her questions are anchored in the intangible world of psychology. Working with industry professionals and their patients, Dieu Ha questions whether such suffering is determined by human gene or social circumstance, utilizing modes of theatre, prop and the dramatization of the self that are inherent methods of psychodrama therapy. Artist talk Le Phi Long, Lai Thi Dieu Ha and Nguyen Van Du are three artists from three very different backgrounds and perspectives when it comes to art-making. About films In the mood for love (2000) IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE is a 2000 Hong Kong film directed by Wong Kar-wai, starring Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung. The film premiered on 20 May 2000, at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Palme d’Or. The film’s original Chinese title, meaning “the age of blossoms” or “the flowery years” – Chinese metaphor for the fleeting time of youth, beauty and love – derives from a song of the same name by Zhou Xuan from a 1946 film. The English title derives from the song, “I’m in the Mood for Love”. Wong had planned to name the film Secrets, until listening to the song late in post-production. The film forms the second part of an informal trilogy, together with the first part Days of Being Wild (released in 1991) and the last part 2046 (released in 2004). Farewell My Concubine (1993) FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE (simplified Chinese: 霸王别姬; traditional Chinese: 霸王別姬; pinyin: Bàwáng Bié Jī; literally: “The Hegemon-King Bids Farewell to His Concubine”), a 1993 Chinese drama film directed by Chen Kaige, is one of the central works of the Fifth Generation movement that brought Chinese film directors to world attention. Similar to other Fifth Generation films like To Live and The Blue Kite, FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE explores the effect of China’s political turmoil during the mid-20th century on the lives of individuals, families, and groups, in this case, two stars in a Peking opera troupe and the woman who comes between them. The film is an adaptation of the novel by Lilian Lee. Lilian Lee is also one of the film’s screenplay writers. The actor Leslie Cheung was used in the film to attract audiences because melodramas are not a popular genre. Also, due to Gong Li’s international stardom, she was used as the other main character in the film. FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE remains to date the only Chinese-language film to win the Cannes Palme d’Or. Milan and Rome”, a photography project by Paolo Belletti and reflections by Giulia Cavaliere. “Nocturnal memory” is a collection of images and words, photos and excerpts. A tale about Milan and Rome but also an abstract portrait that could depict any city in any country throughout the world. The artwork revolves around nighttime, the eternal backdrop of mankind, a universal theme experienced and decrypted by photographer Paolo Belletti and writer Giulia Cavaliere based on the different bonds and relationships that these artists have forged with the two Italian cities. Through the darkness of night, the project unveils the surprising hidden life of empty urban spaces, paving the way for a new aesthetic and cognitive experience for the viewer and, possibly, for a new relationship with the city itself. Giulia Cavaliere writes: “The night in cities emptied of people consists of enormous beams of light that cleave the darkness, corners of unexpected epiphanies, spatial-temporal expanses of tarmac, the unexpected expression, seen for the first time, on the face of a statue that never smiles during the day.” Paolo Belletti is a freelance photographer. He works for Italian magazines like Il Corriere della Sera, L’Espresso, Io_Donna, Living, Wu Magazine. His projects have been exhibited Milan, Rome, Xi an and Muscat. Giulia Cavaliere studied literature focusing on the history of cinema, theater and media languages. She has published two short stories. The Exhibition “Nocturnal Memory. Society today is more and more concerned with gender equality. The EU believes in a strong commitment to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment. Equality between women and men is a fundamental right, a common value of the EU and a necessary condition for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth within the EU as well as a key principle in its external action. In Vietnam, as well as elsewhere in the world, it is worth taking a closer look at the realities in concrete spheres of our lives. Stereotypes and traditional thinking have prevented us in many spheres from utilizing gender equality as a driving force for the development in our society. We often disregard the potential of gender equality for making live better and providing better conditions for everyday existence of the people. Why are there no male nurses and teachers in kindergarten and elementary school? Is it really the right thing for the advancement and development of boys to be surrounded and educated by women only? Where can they find their proper role models? Why are all bus drivers and almost all taxi drivers in Vietnam men? Wouldn’t it be good to have female patience, friendliness and consideration prevail in our streets, at least sometimes? Why do you need to be a man, when you want to work in the traffic police or general police in Vietnam? We want to discuss these and other concrete phenomena of neglect of gender equality, we want to take a look to other countries, and to what tendencies we can see to solve such problems. Wishing to contribute to an open debate, the Delegation of European Union organizes a roundtable discussion entitled “Vietnam: Where are female driver and male nannies?”, with the interaction of Vietnamese and European perspectives. His career has led him to portray the different urban tribes that have emerged in Spain since the eighties. Starting in a specific region of the country, Andalusia, where he photographed people close to him, Trillo’s oeuvre gradually acquired an international and timeless dimension as he continued to photograph the same recognisable groups of people over the next two decades all over the world. From Madrid’s counter-cultural “La Movida” of the eighties to the diversity of the nineties, his brazen frontal portraits reflect how globalisation and communications influence the development of the same features in territorial regions as disparate as the Arab Emirates,Morocco, the United States and Europe and more recently, Korea and Vietnam.
