Mom, boyfriend
jailed for torturing toddler daughter in Vietnam

An abusive mother and her boyfriend got jail terms on Friday
for battering her toddler in a headline-grabbing case in
The People’s
Court of Di An Town,
Trang’s
boyfriend, Do Trong Minh, 27, received three years and six months for the
same charge.
Trang and
Minh were found guilty of torturing Trang's 3-year-old daughter Tran Thi Kim
Ngan, causing her to suffer a brain injury.
According to
the indictment, in early May this year, Trang, a garment worker, and Minh, a
security guard, rent a room in Di An Town’s Binh An Ward where they lived together
as common-law husband and wife and raised Ngan, who will turn 4 in February.
At around 8
pm on September 10, Trang whipped Ngan’s buttock and hands with the bamboo
stick for playing with a gas stove, according to the indictment.
Minh later
joined the beating, punching and hitting Ngan’s head and face.
The couple
then ordered the girl to kneel on the floor for roughly four hours before
letting her go to bed at midnight.

Medical
tests showed that Ngan suffered a brain bleeding and a hematoma in her face.
Ngan was
discharged on September 30, and now lives with her biological father, Tran
Van To, 31, in the Mekong Delta
To was also
entrusted to manage the more than VND200 million (US$9,370) donated to Ngan
after photos of her swollen black and blue face were published in in national
newspapers and news websites.
Apart from
the jail terms, Trang and Minh were ordered to pay VND3.5 million ($164) to
To for Ngan’s medical costs.
