Doctors from Hue Central Hospital successfully conduct kidney, heart transplants

Doctors from the Huế Central Hospital successfully conducted two kidney transplants in HCMC last Saturday morning, before travelling over 1,000km back to Huế to perform a heart transplant that afternoon.

Dr Trần Hoài Ân, director of the Cardiovascular Centre, Huế Central Hospital said that on May 5, a team of experts from the hospital performed a kidney transplant for Nguyễn Tri Phương Hospital in HCM City.

On the same day, they also received news that Huế Central Hospital would receive a heart from the National Center for Coordination of Organ Transplantation to conduct a heart transplant for their patients.

The time of taking the heart almost coincided with the time of surgery for two kidney transplants at Nguyễn Tri Phương Hospital, so the team of experts had to divide human resources to perform.

At 10.47 am on May 6, the heart was taken from the chest of a brain-dead organ donor at Gia Định People's Hospital, HCM City and reached Huế city safely at 1.32 pm on the same day, with support from the national carrier Vietnam Airlines.

Luckily, the 37-year-old patient met all the suitable indicators to receive the heart, doctors said.

After one hour and 20 minutes of surgery, the heart of the brain-dead donor beat again in the recipient's chest.

According to the hospital, this was the ninth heart transplant from a brain-dead donor performed at the Huế Central Hospital by their doctors.

The operation lasted one hour and 20 minutes and was on a 37-year-old patient with end-stage heart failure from Quảng Bình Province.

On the afternoon of the same day, the patient's health was stable after a successful heart transplant from a 19-year-old brain-dead donor.

Earlier, Lanh said a Viet A staff had come to his house with a gift, including VND450 million, on December 3 last year. On the afternoon of the same day, he took the gift to the headquarters of the Hau Giang CDC and reported the issue to the provincial government.

Lanh became director of Hau Giang CDC in 2020.

Multiple violations found in BR-VT’s anti-pandemic equipment purchase

Inspectors of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province have detected multiple violations in the procurement of medical equipment, supplies and Covid test kits in the 2020-2021 period.

From January 2020 to December 2021, the province spent more than VND200 billion buying medical equipment, supplies and test kits, the local media reported.

During the period, the provincial Department of Health and Center for Disease Control borrowed chemicals, test kits and machinery from six companies, including more than 28,500 test kits from the Viet A Technology Corporation, which was not approved in writing by the Ba Ria-Vung Tau government.

The province also borrowed 1.5 million rapid test kits from the Amerphaco Company and then appointed the company as the contractor of a test kit bidding package. However, the provincial government promptly canceled the appointment. If not, the province would have to pay VND210 billion to Amerphaco.

The Department of Health did not study the list of anti-pandemic products in line with the 2013 Bidding Law before proposing the provincial government issue documents on the procurement of medical supplies and the Covid-19 testing price.

The prices of products were offered by providers, who were also the winners of the bidding packages.

In addition, the products were transferred to many providers before being sold to the province, resulting in their high prices. Typically, An Thinh Health Service Trading Co., Ltd won packages Nos. 5 and 6 worth nearly VND15 billion in 2020. However, its goods, which were sold to the Ba Ria-Vung Tau Department of Health, were bought from the Ta Thien An Service Trading Co., Ltd.

Ta Thien An also bought the products from the Dai Phuc Company and the Y Viet Service and Trading Co., Ltd.

In these two packages, investigators also found that goods were purchased after being sold, and the winning bid prices of tens of products were much higher than the import prices, even by 230%.
