20-year-old Nguyen Thi Tram, who was suspected to be killed in 2009 by her foster grandparents in a commune in Tien Giang Province, has suddenly appeared at the local police office to apply for an ID card.

To the great surprise of police officers in Tan Hoi Commune, Cai Lay District, Tram showed her face on Friday, February 15, after four years of mysterious disappearance from the commune’s Tan Hoa Hamlet.

Tram told police that she left the commune for Ho Chi Minh City in June 2009 after a long time of being scolded by her foster grandparents. Tram also said she is working for a trader of building materials in the city.

After verification, police confirmed that Tram is working for a building material shop on Trinh Hoai Duc Street, HCMC’s District 5. The shop is owned by Nguyen Thi Thu Nga, 45, a native of Tien Giang, who has employed Tram since September 2011.

Being contacted by Tuoi Tre, Nga said Tram is an obedient and hard-working girl. Nga also said if she had not been busy she would have accompanied Tram on the return trip to Tien Giang.

According to the police’s records, Tram was adopted as a granddaughter by Vo Van Quan, 68, and his wife, Nguyen Thi Ngan, 69, in Tan Hoa Hamlet when she was 5 years old.

In July 2009, a month after Tran disappeared, many people suspected that the couple had killed the girl and hid her body in a garden.

The sudden disappearance of the 16-year-old girl caused anger among thousands of local residents many of whom flocked to the couple’s house to condemn Quan and Ngan of murder.

They illegally dug up the couple’s garden and many areas nearby to search for the girl’s body but they found nothing. In face of their extreme acts, police had to intervene to recover order and security.
The police later launched an investigation into the case but they have found no evidence that the couple had killed Tram.

Talking with police yesterday, Tram said she has not known anything that happened after she left the house of her foster grandparents.

Meanwhile, Quan and Ngan were very happy to know that Tram had returned to the hamlet, since her appearance helped reject the murder allegation against them.

The couple wanted to receive the girl at their home, but Tram insited that she wanted to meet the couple at the police office.
As the two sides failed to reach an agreement about where they would meet, the Cai Lay District police finally escorted Tram to a coach for her to return to HCMC.
