The accident occurred at around 8.30pm in the area of Loc Thuy Commune, Phu Loc District, after the train, travelling from north to south, had just passed through the Phuoc Tuong Tunnel.
Four out of five carriages turned over and the stones being transported were thrown on the road.
Nguyen Thanh Son, director of Viet Nam Railway’s Thua Thien-Hue branch, said no one was injured in the accident. However, the rescue operation was proving difficult because the area was inaccessible by normal crane-trucks. Specialised vehicles from Da Nang City has been called to assist in rescue work.
The operation of the North-South railway service was stopped for several hours due to the accident. SE7 train travelling from Ha Noi to HCM City was forced to stop at Hue Station until repair work was completed.
According to the initial investigation, the high speed and the heavy freight were responsible for the accident.
