 Activities mark Southern Uprising

Nhan Dan – A ceremony was held in Hoc Mon district, Ho Chi Minh City on November 23, to commemorate the 72nd anniversary of the Southern Uprising (1940-2012).

Former Prime Minister, Phan Van Khai, Party Central Committee member and Deputy Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Thi Thu Ha together with other local authorities’ officials, Vietnamese heroic mothers and war veterans attended the event.
Participants at the ceremony reviewed the course of the Southern Uprising, a glorious record in the revolutionary history of the Party and people of South Vietnam.
They all agreed that the uprising was a vivid illustration of the brave and undaunted fighting spirit, heroism and patriotism of communist soldiers and people in Hoc Mon district.
Earlier, the delegates burnt incenses to commemorate fallen soldiers during the uprising at their district cemetery at Giong T-junction.
* The same day, a monument commemorating late Prime Minister, Vo Van Kiet (1922-2008) was inaugurated in Vung Liem district, Vinh Long province.
Covering an area of over 17,300 sqm, the monument has an exhibition house representing the working place of the late PM and a place of worship.
The buildings aims to show the deep gratitude to the late PM from the Vietnamese Party and people, particularly the people of Vinh Long province. The highly popular figure will be remembered as a resilient revolutionary soldier, prestigious leader of the Vietnamese Party and State and excellent educator of the revolutionary tradition among younger generations.
* On the occasion, the Ministry of Information and Communication issued a set of postage stamps entitled ‘Communist Soldier Nguyen Thi Minh Khai (1910-1941)’.
The VND2000 denomination stamp features the portrait of soldier Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, on the background theme of the Vietnamese Communist Party’s flag and a statue highlighting the resilient fighting spirit of soldiers during the Southern Uprising.
The set aims to honour and pay tribute to Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, an exemplary communist soldier who devoted her life to revolutionary cause of Vietnamese Party and people.
Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, whose real name was Nguyen Thi Vinh, was born in 1910 in Vinh city, Nghe An province. She joined the revolutionary activities in 1927 and became a member of the Indochina Communist Party in 1930. She became Secretary of Sai Gon-Cho Lon Party Committee in 1936, making her the first and only woman to hold this position. She was also one of the leaders of the Southern Uprising. She was arrested and sentenced to death by the French colonialists after the uprising’s failure in 1941.
