This is the official notice of the WHO sent to the Vietnam Ministry of Health, based on the testing results of a British independent laboratory required by the WHO.
Experts tested for toxins of pertussis antigens on the lots 1453037 - 1453074 and 1453127. The test results show that these batches of vaccine are up to standards.
Earlier, Vietnam asked the WHO to test these lots of vaccine to determine the quality of the vaccine after several cases of severe reactions following vaccination. Some samples tested by the National Institute for Vaccines and Medical Biological Products of Vietnam revealed that the vaccine did not meet standards.
According to the WHO, in its meeting on June 12, the Global Advisory Committee on Immunization Safety evaluated the safety of the 5-in-1 vaccine and confirmed its safety. The WHO has recommended that countries continue to use the Quinvaxem vaccine in their expanded immunization program.
This vaccine will be re-used in Vietnam in one month.
Quinvaxem vaccine was used in the expanded immunization program in Vietnam from June 2010 (aid). In May 2013, the Ministry of Health decided to temporarily stop using the vaccine in the expanded immunization program after five children died after vaccination. Four deaths are confirmed to not be caused by the vaccine.
