15 artists showcase digital arts
Digital artworks by 15 artists on Thursday came on display at HCMC Fine Arts Association, showing visitors something unusual in this new art application.
Digital art is performing art ideas via computer with the support of IT applications. Unlike traditional techniques of using brushes, knifes or various tools used by artists to express their creativeness via sight effects or graphics from lines, colors, layers and lights, digital arts use virtual material in a virtual space.
However, finally they become visual pieces thanks to printing technology on canvas, paper, aluminum or wood. And they are completed on the surface by the talents of artists, making the art look like real paintings made from traditional methods.
In this exhibition, artists use digital arts to express all themes from landscapes, portraits, daily activities as well as abstract feelings.
The show runs for one week at the association, 218A Pasteur Street in District 3.
Hanoi tightens control over ad banners
Inspectors of the Hanoi Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism will take action to control advertising banners illegally hung over city streets.
At a recent press conference, the department's chief inspector, Nguyen Thanh Phong, said the city has banned the hanging of banners across streets since July 15.
The move followed a recent case in which banners for a music show entitled “The Hanoian” in front of Hanoi Opera House were cut by someone, causing public concerns.
Nguyen My Trang, Director of My Thanh Company which organised the programme, said that it was the action of competitors and that those who cut the banners were trying to damage the image for the programme.
According to Mr. Phong, currently such banners are almost non-existent on the electric poles and trees in Hoan Kiem District.
For a long time, the front and sides of Hanoi Opera House were covered with banners advertising various art programmes. However, in recent years Hanoi's streets have been full of of advertising banners resulting in waste. On July 19, Tran Quoc Chiem, Deputy Director of the local Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism said companies that legally hang their banners leave them there for months despite the allowed time of 15 days.
He added that in 2011 the department inspectors cut down banners advertising a show by overseas Vietnamese singer Che Linh, however they reappeared the very next day.
The city does have areas where it is legal to advertise, but since the expansion of Hanoi in 2008 the demand have increased greatly and the available advertising space is not enough.
Vietnamese author presses on with lawsuit against Apple
Despite Apple’s pledge to remove Le Kieu Nhu’s novel from its Apple Store, the author has decided to continue with the lawsuit which seeks compensation from Apple.
After her lawyer, Nguyen Thanh Cong, of East Law Firm, filed a petition with California Civil Court that Apple infringed on the copyright of her novel, "Soi Xich" or “The Chain”, by selling the novel in its Apple Store without seeking her consent; an Apple representative sent a letter to her lawyer in which the company pledged that they would remove her novel from the Apple Store as soon as possible.
Le Kieu Nhu, however, told VTC News that she’s dissatisfied with Apple’s solution.
“In their letter to my representative of July 11 they passed on the responsibility to the software developer Boilder Shimp. Even though they’ve pledged to remove my novel from their Apple Store, I think it doesn’t make sense when they pass the accountability onto a third party. Apple has illegally sold my novel and earned a lot for over the past four years. They must compensate me,” Nhu said.
Nhu says she still maintains her request that first Apple compensates her with USD100,000, and at the same time stops illegal sales of her book.
“If they don’t give me the compensation, I’ll have my lawyer in the US continue the lawsuit,” she emphasised.
The author and her representative are compiling a new petition to Apple on the issue.
They’ve also linked with several domestic authors whose copyrights have also been infringed by Apple, including, Nguyen Ngoc Tu and Bui Anh Tuan, in order to sign a common petition that would be sent to the Copyright Office of Vietnam to call for support.
Ten years of cultural conventions under review
Viet Nam is making a big effort to implement UNESCO's conventions, especially those relating to the country's commitment to preserving and promoting its cultural and natural heritages, said UNESCO experts at a forum held in Ha Noi yesterday.
"Viet Nam has made concrete contributions to the role of culture as both a driver and enabler of sustainable development," stressed Sun Lei, UNESCO's representative to Viet Nam, during the forum discussing the 10 years since the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage was signed.
"Viet Nam's diversity of cultural expression is clear in the activities of its communities, who show great respect for their history and the cultural treasures left by our ancestors," she said.
"Through Xoan singing and worshipping the Hung Kings in Phu Tho, Ca Tru (ceremonial singing) in Hai Duong, Ha Noi as well as the gong culture in the Central Highlands, we see a commitment from every society to further the development and share its benefits.
"Within a community, memories and intangible cultural heritages are visibly sustained by the public's commemoration of people. I am very glad to acknowledge that the educational programmes taking place in the provinces are aimed at raising the awareness of the general public, in particular young people, according to Article 14 of the Convention."
Addressing the forum, Pham Cao Phong, secretary general of the Viet Nam National Commission for UNESCO, said that Viet Nam had been recognised seven times for a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage, which proved that the country possessed a diverse culture.
This recognition had also brought with it a chance for the country to advertise its unique cultural values and to use them to further the development of tourism in order to make a more effective contribution to the socio-economic development of the country, he said.
Participants at the forum objectively and scientifically assessed the tasks, ascertaining which had been completed and proposing solutions to the problems behind those that have not been completed over the past 10 years.
The UNESCO representative office in Ha Noi also made a commitment to support these agencies to fulfill their various tasks, including encouraging local communities to take responsibility for their heritages and to enact "urgent protection" measures for those heritages at high risk.
It proposed a more immediate and effective policy for protecting heritages. For example, the singing art of ethnic minority groups in the Central Highlands, which has been listed amongst the heritages in need of urgent protection since the early 2000s.
Yet the art has not been mentioned in Viet Nam's list of heritages in need of urgent protection, despite the fact that the old singers are dying and young people don't seem to pay much attention to traditional arts.
The office also hoped that the draft of regulations on giving honorable artisan titles by the culture ministry would be approved soon so individuals making great contributions to protecting and developing cultural heritages receive proper treatment and are helped to make further contributions.
The case of Dong Van Karst Plateau Geo-park in the northern province of Ha Giang was cited at the forum as an example of a lack of attention to local tangible and intangible heritages.
A master plan for developing the park from 2012-20 with vision towards 2030 has just been approved with the focus on exploiting geological values for tourism. In the meantime, local intangible values have not been properly paid attention to, according to a report by the office.
The plan only stresses on developing some traditional craft villages such as the wine making and embroidery villages, that supports tourism but lacks adequate investment on long-term cultural values.
The office also called for careful research to be conducted before compiling files seeking recognition for traditional and intangible cultural values as well as serious judgements being made on the unique features of the heritages.
The agencies concerned also need to carry out independent research on the effects of formal recognition by the State or UNESCO on the heritages, the report stressed.
