Deputy Defence Minister, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh emphasised that Vietnam’s defence policy is consistent and affirmed that the country only wants to protect its territorial sovereignty and contribute to peace and stability in the region and the world.
He made these remarks on June 1 while answering reporters’ questions on the sidelines of the 12th Shangri La Dialogue in Singapore.
Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung delivered a keynote speech at the dialogue which that confirmed Vietnam’s defence policy is one of peace and self-defence, and it is not allied to any other country. Vinh said this policy is in line with the trend of the era and globally supported.
In his speech, PM Dung also made a general assessment of the regional situation and proposed constructive strategic measures for regional security, he added.
Sr. Lt. General Vinh also reported that PM Dung announced Vietnam’s decision to participate in UN peacekeeping operations in military, medicine and observation, saying that this decision confirms Vietnam is a responsible member of the international community.
“It is a positive step in our country’s international integration, including integration in defence and security,” he noted.
General Vinh noted that this was the first time a Vietnamaese Prime Minister was asked to deliver a speech at the Shangri La Dialogue.
It was also the first time the world defence community had a chance to hear a Vietnamese Government leader talking about defence and security issues, Vinh added.
