Seven people were killed and 40 others injured when a bus plunged 30 meters into a mountain pass in the northern province of Lao Cai on Friday.
The Vietnam News Agency reported that the accident happened as the bus was coming down the Ma Yen Son pass in Bao Yen District.
Five people died on the spot, while two others succumbed to injuries as they were being taken to the hospital.
Local authorities mobilized more than 100 people, including police officers and military soldiers, to the site for rescuing operations.
Initial information is that the bus started from the northern port city of Hai Phong, carrying passengers to attend an annual festival at Bao Ha Temple, which is situated at the other side of the pass, the news agency reported.
When the bus reached the top of the pass, the passengers decided to return to Pho Rang Town and stay overnight there, because it was already dark and some sections of the pass had suffered landslides, the report said.
Local authorities are investigating the accident.
