HA NOI (Biz Hub)– Customs officials in the northern port city
of Hai Phong have seized about 2.4 tonnes of
elephant tusks smuggled from Malaysia.
The cargo was found
hidden inside a container imported from Malaysia, which had been declared
as sea shells.
The issuer of the
declaration was Hoang Gia Exim Joint Stock Company located in Hai Phong
City. The cargo has
been kept by police for further investigation.
Two weeks ago,
another large seizure was made when the city's customs officers found more
than 2 tonnes of elephant tusks and about 146 kilos of tortoise-shells hidden
in a container from Malaysia.
Viet Nam officially banned the trade of elephant tusks in 1994 under
the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and
Flora to discourage hunting of the country's dwindling population of
elephants, which poachers value highly for their ivory. -VNS
