Vietnam National UniversityHCM City’s Faculty of Medicine recently announced the results of a study conducted on 4,060 semen samples from An Sinh and Hanh Phuc Hospitals taken between April 2010 and May 2012.
The study showed that more than 85% of the samples had low sperm counts and motility. About 45% of the samples had abnormally shaped cells; 80% of the infertile patients were aged under 40.
Doctor Ho Manh Tuong, General Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Association (HOSREM), said the infertility rate is rather high and the number of infertile men is on the rise.
Tu Du Hospital, in HCM City is often overcrowded with patients who apply for infertility treatment. The number of male patients who are aged less than 40 has become as high as 70%.
Doctor Hoang Thi Diem Tuyet, Deputy Director of Tu Du Hospital, said, “Recent statistics have shown that 30% of the infertility cases are due to men, 30% on woman, 30% on both sides and 10% is are for unknown reasons.”
“There should be a careful study on the causes of this situation,” Ho Manh Tuong suggested.
He added that this is the first report conducted in Vietnam using World Health Organisation (WHO) standards. The results will be used as a basis for further studies in the near future.
