Doctors in the southern An Giang Province have taken a cystolith weighing 950 grams from the bladder of a 59-year-old man who had suffered from the stone for over 10 years.

The man, Nguyen Van Duc, of Tri Ton District, was hospitalized at the Binh Dan Hospital in Long Xuyen City on the morning of October 5 for bladder problems that made him pass blood in his urine. He also found it very hard to urinate.

An X-ray test was made and doctors found a large stone occupying most of his bladder and suppressing the urethra.

Doctors conducted a surgery on him later the same day to remove the stone, which is 12 cm long, 10 cm wide and 9 cm thick, said Dr Pham Tan Bay, director of the hospital, who performed the operation with the aid of another doctor, Vu Van Ty.

The patient recovered soon after the surgery.

Dr. Bay said the cystolith removed from Duc's bladder is the largest he has ever seen. “More than 10 years ago, doctors at this hospital removed a 260-gram stone from a patient.”

Duc said that had suffered urinary problems for more than 10 years and he thought there was something inside the bladder that caused frequent, hard urination and haematuria (blood in urine).

He said he had not gone to the hospital for examination and treatment since he was afraid he could not afford hospital fees, but his condition got worse last week, so he had to borrow money from a neighbor to go to Binh Dan Hospital.
