At 9:30pm on Oct 10, the residential home of General Vo Nguyen Giap on Hoang Dieu street in Hanoi was officially closed to mourners who want to pay their last respects to the national revered figure.
However, as of 10pm, thousands of mourners still gathered outside his home. Some knelt down with hands together while some had security guards standing at the house’s gates lay bunches of flowers inside.
“R.I.P. General” – said 83-year-old Nguyen Thi Tu from Ha Dong district, who was unable to elbow herself into large crowds of mourners to enter the General’s house.
“I queued from around noon today. But when I was just hundreds of meters from the house, the gates were closed. Anyway, I’m happy to stand here to pay tribute to him” - said mourner Hoang Van Nam hailing from the central province of Da Nang.
