Historical images at General Vo Nguyen Giap’s funeral  Millions of people did not mind rain and sun to queue for hours to bid farewell to the beloved General. Tears rolled down on the face of people, from the elderly to children. Many people screamed “My father" and “Long live General” on the street ... The General’s funeral days went on the national history of Vietnam. Nearly two days after General Vo Nguyen Giap passed away at 108 Military Hospital, his family opened the door of the General’s house at 30 Hoang Dieu, Hanoi, for people to pay homage from 2pm on October 6. At that moment, tens of thousands of people lined up on the street. Four days later, the number of people from other provinces rose highly. They queued for several kilometers long from the General’s house in Hoang Dieu Street to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, making a circle over the Hoang Van Thu to Hoang Dieu. On the day of the official memorial service at the National Funeral Home, the amount of people was also huge. The death of General Giap is a big loss for the people of Vietnam. Inside the heart and mind of each Vietnamese, the legendary General is a monument; therefore many people were willing to queue for eight hours to pay respect to him for the last time. Veterans, wounded soldiers and those who are working in the army, despite their weak health, were determined to be at the funeral home to venerate the General. There were people who were exhausted and fainted after a long time queuing kept staying on the line. In the night of October 10, the last day the General’s family opened the door for people to pay homage, the painful emotions burst suddenly when the gate closed. Many people had already paid homage to the General still wanted to do it again. Nobody can count how many hearts were broken, how many tears rolled down on the face of the people who stood at the gate to mourn the legendary General of the people. The General’s family had to constantly thank the people and wished them to come back and stop standing outside the street crying to affect their own health. Nearly 10,000 volunteers in Hanoi were mobilized for duty during the General’s funeral. The memorial service for the General was also attended by many children. Though they are small, they have known about the General’s great victories through their grandparents and parents… Many people took their babies of several months to the memorial service. This couple was from Hai Duong province, with their baby in their arms. Standing in front of his altar, no one could hold their tears. During a week, every night people held candles to commemorate the General on Hoang Dieu Street. They stayed awake all night on the sidewalk, waiting until the next day to pay homage to the General.
