The scene of the accident that killed 49-year-old Japanese woman, Miyamoto Michiko on September 30. Tuoi Tre
The body of a 49-year-old Japanese woman, Miyamoto Michiko, who died after being run over by a bus on Monday in Ho Chi Minh City, is being kept at the Saigon General Hospital’s morgue, awaiting her family’s decision regarding funeral arrangements.
The information was provided to Tuoi Tre by readers who were once taught by Michiko, a Japanese tutor who used to teach at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities.

These readers also affirmed that the teacher’s name was not Nakinuma Joji and her age was not 50 as previously published by the media.

The mistake was due to the fact that police found a passport for a woman named Nakinuma Joji, 50, on the dead victim when they were examining the scene of the accident, readers said.

One of the readers, identified as V, said, “As a freelance tutor, Michiko taught many students at a relatively low fee. I used to take her to the bus station to go to school everyday. Concerned agencies are trying to seek her relatives in Japan…”

On Tuesday, Dr Ho Minh Quang, head of the Oriental Studies Faculty at the university, also confirmed with Tuoi Tre that Michiko was not an official lecturer of the school.

After Michiko’s death, the Facebook page “Miyamoto Michiko – May you rest in peace” was created for the deceased teacher, a forum for friends and strangers alike to write their personal thoughts, stories, and regrets.

The page creator wrote in a post that the Japanese General Consulate has contacted Miyamoto's relatives in Japan.

Another post on the page cited Nguyen Thi Thu Huong, an official from the Oriental Studies Faculty at the university, as saying that many Japanese people want to organize a funeral for Michiko in Vietnam.

If there are Vietnamese people who also want to do so, they should file an application to organize it. The application should show the name and the signature of the organizer along with the names and signatures of the co-organizers, the form of contribution for the funeral, and other related details, Huong was quoted as saying.

The Japanese General Consulate will refer the application to Michiko’s relatives for consideration, Huong was cited as saying.

As previously reported, the deadly accident occurred at about 3:30 pm on September 30, when Miyamoto got off a bus at the Ben Thanh Bus Station on Pham Ngu Lao Street, near the Quach Thi Trang Roundabout in District 1.  She had taken the bus after leaving the school.

Walking with crutches, she was then aided by a female student to cross the street to take another bus to go to her house on Lam Van Ben Street in District 7.

Unfortunately, the lecturer suddenly fell to the ground while crossing the street on the pedestrian crossing. Just at this moment, a bus came and ran her over, killing her on the scene.

The teacher suffered from bone degeneration in her leg, so she had difficulty walking and usually used buses for daily travel, her students said.

After the accident occurred, many readers have sent their feedback toTuoi Tre, expressing their concerns about the dangerous risks of walking on the streets of large cities like HCM City.

Last month an American teacher, Wayne Madison, 55, also died in a traffic accident when his bicycle collided with a truck in Tan Thuan Dong, District 7, HCMC on September 9. The collision caused Madison to fall to the ground, and he was run over by the truck.

Madison was an English teacher who lived in the district.
