Cong Phuong scored twice as Vietnam gained a thrilling 5-1 win over Australia in the last match of group F at the Asian U-19 qualifying round held in Malaysia on Monday.
With nine points in group F, Vietnam officially advanced to the Asian U-20 Championship next year in Myanmar.
In the ninth minute, midfielder Cong Phuong received a pass from Tuan Anh and dribbled past an Aussie defender before making a blast to send the ball flying low into the goal frame.
Seven minutes later, Thanh Tung seized control of the ball from an Australian player and made a shot to successfully convert it into the second goal.
Australian players began playing flying football with long passes to take advantage of their better fitness and height.
In the 44th minute, Cong Phuong set up Van Toan in a favor position near the box and Toan didn’t miss the chance to extend the gap to 3-0.
However, Australia scored a goal in the last-gasp minute of the first half to shorten it to 3-1.
At the 55th minute in the second half, Cong Phuong scored his second goal of the game. He dribbled the ball along the left wing past two rival defenders and blasted a shot at the distance of 18 meters to defeat Aussie goalkeeper Nizic.
Soon later, striker Lam Ti Phong was fouled in the box and Vietnam was awarded a penalty kick. Van Son, who made his debut performance at the Asian U-19 qualifiers, shot the ball flying into the right corner of the frame to fix the result at 5-1 for Vietnam.
So, the leader Vietnam won the only ticket of group F to advance. The Asian U-19 qualifying round has nine groups. The nine leading teams and six runners-up will win tickets to advance to the Asian U-20 Football Championship next year, to be held in Myanmar.
