Plans are in the works to expand the Tan Son Nhat International Airport to the largest possible scale, the Airports Corporation of Vietnam has announced.
ACV general director Le Manh Hung said his company has begun to work on a plan to enable the Ho Chi Minh City-based terminal to better service an increasing number of passengers.
A project to build the Long Thanh International Airport in the city’s neighboring province of Dong Nai has also been approved to reduce pressure for Tan Son Nhat, but the project will only reach completion within the next decade. Hence, expanding the HCMC terminal is necessary, Hung said.
According to the plan, the international terminal at Tan Son Nhat Airport will be expanded to allow space for 40 more check-in counters, while the domestic terminal will be expanded by some 3,900 square meters.
Tan Son Nhat was expected to receive its 20 millionth passenger in 2015, but the target was reached two years earlier in late 2013.
At its busiest, the airport serves as many as 550 flights per day.
At a recent meeting, Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang suggested that ACV call for private sectors to invest in several units such as parking lots at the airport.
