 Central Vietnam braces for typhoon, 2 die in Thua Thien-Hue

Many central provinces have been affected by violent winds, torrential rains and rising sea water caused by Typhoon Nari that is forecast to hit there on Tuesday morning.
According to a report issued at 10:30 pm Monday by the National Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Center, the coming typhoon continued to bring torrential rains in central provinces, with winds of up to 149 kph.
On Ly Son Island (Quang Ngai Province), the rainfall reached 244.4 mm, while it amounted to 88.5 mm in Nam Dong (Hue), 67 mm in Tam Ky (Quang Nam) and 61 mm in Da Nang.
At 10:00 pm October 14, the typhoon was centered at 16.2 N, 109.5 E, about 140 km east of the Quang Tri-Quang Ngai area. The winds in the areas closest to the typhoon’s eye were as strong as 118-149 kph, with gusts of 167-201 kph.
The storm is moving west at 15 kph and will weaken after hitting middle central provinces on early  Tuesday.  At 10 am tomorrow, the storm will be centered in the Vietnam-Laos border, with winds of 62-74 kph.
At an earlier meeting held this afternoon in Da Nang, Le Thanh Hai, deputy director of the National Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Center, said the typhoon was moving west towards the coastal areas of three provinces, Thua Thien-Hue, Da Nang and Quang Nam, packing winds of 103-133 kph and gusts of 134-166 kph.
The typhoon will hit the region on October 15 morning, Hai said.

By late Monday evening, more than 20,000 households with nearly 100,000 people in the affected provinces were evacuated to safe places, the National Committee for Seach and Rescue reported.
At an urgent meeting this afterrnoon, Deputy Health Minister Pham Le Tuan asked all the key staffs of the ministry's Steering  Committee for Search and Rescue to work around the clock.
The Defense Ministry has prepared about 190.700 soldiers and militia and 936 trucks, four amoured vehicles, 1.229 vessels and six aircraft for use in emergencies.
Two teenagers were reported to die in Thua Thien-Hue Province after being swept away by violent sea waves this afternoon.

The two victims were Nguyen Quoc Bao, 15, and Nguyen Hoang Nam, 12, both from Phu Loc District, said the Lang Co Border Guard Station.

The search for the bodies of the victims are underway.

Tuoi Tre correspondents on the Hai Van Pass reported that it heavy rains began to fall in the area at 6 pm.
According to the Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control, the typhoon has caused torrential rains in many central provinces, at rainfalls of 400-600 m/s.

Nguyen Xuan Dieu, deputy head of the Irrigation General Department, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said the authorities of four provinces including Da Nang, Quang Nam, Thua Thien-Hue, and Quang Tri have evacuated a total of about 78,000 people from vulnerable areas to safe places.
In Da Nang alone, 55,000 residents have been evacuated in three districts: Lien Chieu, Ngu Hanh Son and Son Tra.
As many as 28 irrigation reservoirs in the region from Quang Binh and Binh Dinh provinces can be affected by the coming typhoon, Dieu warned.
In Tan Hiep Island commune in Quang Nam Province, 200 residents have been taken out of dangerous areas, Tran Tan Dung, Secretary of the commune Party Committee said, adding that the area has suffered from violent winds of 89-102 kph.

In Thua Thien-Hue's Loc Vinh commune, 301 families with 1,186 people were also been moved to the safe places this afternoon, local authorities reported.
In Hue, heavy rains have flooded many residential areas in the city and from 8 pm the flooding has isolated two hamlets from their surrounding areas.
Due to the coming storm, the Quang Nam Province Department of Education and Training has decided to close all schools tomorrow, October 15.
Heavy rains and gusts knocked down a series of electric poles on Ly Son Island in Quang Ngai at 6:30 pm, causing a power outage there.
