Life in an odd house on Saigon’s most beautiful road
In the space of less than 6 m2 of the polygonal house on the outside beltway in HCM City, Mrs. Som’s family has to arrange furniture to make the most of living area.
Located on the road Tan Son Nhat - Binh Loi - Outer beltway, the house of Mrs. Thi Tran Som, 65, attracts the eyes of passers-by with its strange design and the living space of over 6 m2.
To build this new road from Tan Son Nhat Airport to Binh Trieu in Thu Duc district, many houses were cleared. Some houses were clear completely and some left with bizarre designs. Mrs. Som’s house is one of the remaining houses after site clearance. With the area of 3x2 m, the stairs are built outside the house. The house foundation is nearly 2 m higher than the road.
Facing the road, the first floor becomes a shop.
The remaining space of the ground floor is the kitchen with full appliances and a small toilet.
The mezzanine of the house is the “bed room” with less than 2 meters in width. The house owner said that this is the “bed” of her and her granddaughter. The utensils such as blankets, pillows and the fan are minimized to fit the area.
The stairs to the 2nd floor is only about 60 cm wide.
The second floor is designed in the triangle shape, where contains old furniture and the altar.
The corner, which used to be the bathroom, is now used to store old furniture.
The kitchen of over a meter wide with a lot of utensils.
The family uses every corner of the house to arrange things.
"I feel pretty comfortable living here. It is somewhat smaller and we have to struggle when the weather is hot but this is still my home," Mrs. Som said.
